Usage

A urethral catheter is a hollow flexible tube for insertion into a body cavity, duct, or vessel that allows the path of fluids or distends a passageway. Its intended uses are the drainage of urine from the bladder via the urethra or insertion through a blood vessel into the heart limited to diagnostic causes only.

Adverse events 

The following are a few of the adverse effects associated with the use of a urethral catheter: 

• Burning with urination

• Blood in the urine

• Urinary Tract Infection

• Malposition

• Inadequate Relief of Obstruction

• Encrustation

• Stent Fracture

• Ureteral Erosion or Fistulization

• Forgotten Stent

Contraindications 

A dual lumen catheter is not intended for use in the following cases: 

• Gross hematuria

• Evidence of urethral infection

• Urethral pain or discomfort

• Low bladder volume/compliance

• Patient refusal

• Blood at the meatus
