Overview of Vaccine 

Avaxim injection works to protect against Hepatitis A. This is an infection in the liver caused by the Hepatitis A virus. Hepatitis A virus transmits from one person to the other through infected food or water. The dose of this vaccine is decided by the medical practitioner as per the health condition and medicines you already administer. Both the shots of the Avaxim vaccine are needed to get full-proof protection from Hepatitis A virus infection. 

Usage of Avaxim

The Avaxim vaccine is used to immunize people from the infection caused by the Hepatitis A virus. Its active substance is inactivated Hepatitis A virus (GBM strain). This injection is given in two shots. The second shot is administered after six months from the previous one. A medical practitioner or a nurse will give you this vaccine. It is not indicated for self-administration. 

Contraindications

Dosage 

The Avaxim vaccine is administered in two shots by the healthcare professional. Do not self-administer it. Avaxim geriatrics vaccine is indicated for use in patients older than 12 years for immunization against Hepatitis A virus infection. And, Avaxim Pediatrics vaccine is indicated for use in patients older than 1 year to 15 years of age inclusive. This injection should be administered into the buttocks. Pre-exposure and post-exposure immunization are both essential to prevent HAV infection in the future. Its administration is recommended in the following cases- 

  • People who are at increased risk of developing Hepatitis A virus infection. 

  • People traveling to HAV-prone areas. 

  • People who have close contact with people from HAV-prone areas. 

  • People who are suffering from chronic liver disease. 

  • People who are at risk of infection due to lifestyle factors, for example:

    • People who use consume drugs, and

    • Males who have sex with males.

Warnings and Precautions
