Overview

Duovir (Lamivudine and Zidovudine) tablet is a combination of two antiretroviral medications. It is used for the treatment of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) infection. This medication boosts your immune system to fight against infection and prevents the virus from multiplying. Duovir tablet increases the CD4 cell (white blood cells that protect against infection) count in your blood. It is important to take this medicine as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take this medicine in the wrong way as it may lead to some serious side effects. If you experience any signs and symptoms while receiving this medicine, inform your doctor immediately.

Pharmacodynamics

Lamivudine (Duovir):- A nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) with activity against Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 (HIV-1) and Hepatitis B (HBV) in order to disrupt viral DNA synthesis. It can form active metabolites when phosphorylated, that compete for incorporation into viral DNA. Via DNA incorporation, lamivudine metabolites work to inhibit the activity of the HIV reverse transcriptase enzyme and then act as a chain terminator of DNA synthesis.

Zidovudine (Duovir):- Works to inhibit the activity of HIV-1 reverse transcriptase by competing with its natural nucleotide counterpart thymidine triphosphate for incorporation into newly synthesized viral DNA. It is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) with activity against Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 (HIV-1). This compound is phosphorylated to active metabolites that compete for incorporation into viral DNA. They work to inhibit the HIV reverse transcriptase enzyme competitively and act as a chain terminator of DNA synthesis.
