Overview
Rilutek contains Riluzole as an active ingredient; this tablet is a glutamate antagonist and used as an anticonvulsant (anti-fits). This medication helps in blocking the action of glutamate (chemical messenger) and that's how it protects the nerves in the brain. Do not stop the dosage of Rilutek tablets without taking permission from your physician.
Pharmacodynamics
Riluzole belongs to a class of medication known as benzothiazole, and this tablet is indicated for the treatment of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). This medication extends survival and/or time to tracheostomy. It is also neuroprotective in certain in vivo experimental models of neuronal injury involving excitotoxic mechanisms. The etiology and pathogenesis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) are not known, although several hypotheses have been advanced. One hypothesis is that motor neurons, made vulnerable through either genetic predisposition or environmental factors, are injured by glutamate. In some cases of familial ALS, the enzyme superoxide dismutase is defective.
Usage
Rilutek tablet is used to treat a type of nerve disease called Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). This medication is not a permanent cure for nerve damage; it protects the nerves of the brain from the chemical messenger. The recommended dose of Rilutek tablet is decided by your healthcare professional. Dosage may vary differently to the patients according to their age, weight, and other health concerns.
