Hepatitis C
Emvarin works to mediate direct antiviral activity against several DNA and RNA viruses. It increases the mutation frequency in the genomes of several RNA viruses. Ribavirin is a member of the nucleoside antimetabolite drugs (interfering with duplication of the viral genetic material). The drug inhibits the activity of the enzyme RNA-dependent RNA polymerase because it resembles the building blocks of the RNA molecules. Ribavirin acts as a mutagen in the target virus and causes an 'error catastrophe' due to increased viral mutations. RTP pairs with cytidine triphosphate or uridine triphosphate with equal efficiency and to block HCV RNA elongation. It then causes premature termination of nascent HCV RNA whereby increasing mutagenesis by producing defective virions.
