    Fulvestrant 250mg injection also popular by the brand name Faslodex is an anticancer medication. It is used for the treatment of Breast Cancer in post-menopausal women. Fulvestrant is an estrogen receptor antagonist and exhibits zero agonist properties. It blocks the effect of estrogen on cancerous breast cells and as a result, interferes in the growth and spreading of the tumor.

    Faslodex 250mg injection or Fulvestrant vial is administered as an intramuscular injection. It is a prescription-based drug. Therefore, the dosage, and duration will be decided by the doctor. Also, inform your doctor about all your prior medical conditions and allergies.

    Mechanism of Action

    Faslodex 250mg injection (Fulvestrant) is used in the treatment of metastatic breast cancer which is hormone receptor-positive in post-menopausal women. It does not exhibit agonist properties but has anti-estrogen properties.  Fulvestrant is an estrogen receptor antagonist and it works by binding to the estrogen receptors of cancerous cells. As a result -

    • It blocks estrogen from binding to its own receptor.
    • It degrades the estrogen receptors to stop it from functioning again.

    This decreases the levels of estrogen and therefore, reduces the growth and spreading of cancerous cells.

    Contraindication

    1. Allergies – Some components of Fulvestrant 250mg vial can start an allergic reaction. Hence, it is recommended to consult your doctor and find an appropriate alternative for this medicine.
    2. Pregnancy – Fulvestrant can cause harm to the fetus hence, pregnancy should be avoided
    3. Breastfeeding – Fulvestrant 250mg can pass through the milk thus, it is advised to stop breastfeeding during the treatment.
    4. Pediatrics - Fulvestrant injection should not be given to children below 18.
