Emtricitabine (Emfovir): It is a synthetic nucleoside analog of cytidine. This compound is phosphorylated by cellular enzymes for the formation of emtricitabine 5'-triphosphate. Emtricitabine works to inhibit the activity of the HIV-1 reverse transcriptase (RT) by competing with the natural substrate deoxycytidine 5'-triphosphate and by incorporating it into nascent viral DNA resulting in chain termination. The compound is a weak inhibitor of mammalian DNA polymerase alpha, beta, epsilon, and mitochondrial DNA polymerase gamma.
