Mechanism of action

  • Axitinib 5mg targets tyrosine kinases on the surface of VEGFR. Through this, it works by interrupting signals required for tumor proliferation through these receptors.
  • The main action of axitinib involves angiogenesis inhibition. This is the development of blood vessels responsible for tumor development.
  • It does so mainly through VEGFR-1, -2, and -3 that are highly expressed in advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC)
  • The inhibition of angiogenesis leads to effective starvation of the tumor.
