Overview
Tafero EM is a generic medication containing emtricitabine and tenofovir alafenamide and is intended for use in adults and adolescents above 12 years old with a body weight equal to or greater than 35 kilograms. Tafero EM is administered orally on a daily basis, with or without food, and acts as a reverse transcriptase inhibitor, thereby preventing replication of HIV‑1.
Not only does Tafero EM prevent the spread of infection along with other antiretroviral medicines, but it may also be used as a form of PrEP (pre‑exposure prophylaxis) for those individuals who have an increased risk of being infected. Although not a cure for HIV, Tafero EM provides effective control and enhances the immune response of an individual.

Mechanism of action
Emtricitabine (Tafero EM), a synthetic nucleoside analog of cytidine, is phosphorylated by cellular enzymes to form emtricitabine 5'-triphosphate. Emtricitabine inhibits the activity of the HIV-1 reverse transcriptase (RT) by competing with the natural substrate deoxycytidine 5'-triphosphate and by being incorporated into nascent viral DNA, which results in chain termination.
