Mechanism of action

The mode of action of Viraday Tablet consists of three components that have combined effects against HIV multiplication. Efavirenz (600 mg) is an NNRTI (non‑nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor) that binds with the HIV-1 reverse transcriptase enzyme and inhibits its capability to convert the viral RNA to DNA.

Emtricitabine (200 mg) is an NRTI (nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor) whose role is to compete for binding sites on the enzyme with the nucleosides. It becomes activated in the cell and integrates into the DNA chain to make it terminate prematurely. In the same vein, tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (300 mg) is another NRTI that activates itself in the cell to integrate within the viral DNA chain to make it terminate prematurely.
