Xospata 40mg Tablet (generic name gilteritinib) is an oral, small-molecule drug that works as a targeted inhibitor of the FLT3 enzyme. It specifically binds to and inhibits mutated forms of the gene called FLT3-ITD, which can cause acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cells to grow. Xospata comes in an oral tablet form with a recommended dose of 40 mg, making it convenient for most patients.
While its exact mechanism of action isn’t known, scientists believe that by inhibiting FLT3-ITD, it prevents cancer cell proliferation and induces apoptosis - or programmed cell death - in those affected cells. Clinical studies have shown that Xospata 40 mg is generally safe and effective at treating relapsed/refractory AML in adults; however, it does come with potential side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, edema, and lowered white blood cell count.
