Soliris is a formulation of Eculizumab, a humanized monoclonal antibody. This medicine is used in the treatment of patients diagnosed with myasthenia gravis. This disease is a long-term neuromuscular condition. Eculizumab is also used in the prevention of red blood cell breakdown. It is indicated to patients weighing above 5 kilograms (11 pounds) to treat various blood disorders. Soliris (Eculizumab) is available in the strength of 300mg as injections for intravenous (IV) use only.
Soliris comprises Eculizumab as its active salt. It is a monoclonal antibody that inhibits the cleavage of complement protein C5 into C5a and C5b, as well as the development of the terminal complement complex C5b-9. Complement-mediated intravascular hemolysis in paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria, complement-mediated microangiopathy in atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome, and immune-mediated inflammation and central nervous system damage in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder are all prevented by inhibiting this complex.
